Before you dive into this blog post let me preface it by saying, I hate that I felt like I should write it.  Any sort of post where I see a photographer justifying what they charge just kind of hits me the wrong way.  We shouldn’t have to justify what we charge.  In fact, most businesses don’t.  I have never seen Saks, Neiman’s, Macy’s, Target, or even my local hairdresser go into detail on why they charge what they do. But for some reason, when the phone rings for a photographer or even a creative in general, we are often immediately greeted with hostility when we give them the fees for our services.

So in an effort to gently communicate to people what they probably already know, I thought it was time to put this out into the world.  So here goes. . . 

It's a common question I hear in my Vienna, VA studio: "Why do professional headshots cost so much?" When I share my session fee of $320, some people are surprised, and I totally get it. • Insurance: Protecting my business and my clients is paramount. This includes liability insurance, equipment insurance, and more.
• Software & Subscriptions: From professional editing suites to gallery hosting platforms and accounting software, these monthly and annual subscriptions are essential for a smooth workflow and delivering your final images.
• Marketing & Website: You found me, right? That's thanks to ongoing efforts in marketing, website development, and online presence.
• Studio Overhead: Now I am fortunate enough to not have studio overhead but there are still expenses in keeping my space clean and ready to invite my clients in.
• Continuing Education: The photography world is always evolving. I invest in workshops, courses, and conferences to stay up-to-date on the latest techniques and trends, ensuring you receive the best possible service.

The Session Itself & Post-Production: Your session includes not just the shooting time, but also the meticulous process of selecting the very best images, carefully retouching them to perfection (think subtle skin smoothing, stray hair removal, and color correction), and preparing your final high-resolution digital files. This post-production work is often the most time-consuming part of the process and is crucial for delivering a polished, professional result.
