What is a Headshot anyway?

What Exactly Is Headshot Photography?
Ever scrolled through LinkedIn, seen a fantastic profile picture, and thought, "Wow, they look great!"? If you did, you may not have immediately thought that they look confident and capable, but you might have felt a little bit of a lean in and wanted to learn more about them. If that has happened to you, you just witnessed the power of a great headshot.
But what is headshot photography really? And why is everyone from realtors to lawyers to smart entrepreneurs making sure they have one?
Let's break it down!
More Than Just a Selfie: The Art of the Professional Headshot
At its core, a headshot is a professionally taken photograph designed to showcase you in your best light, specifically for business and professional purposes. Think of it as your visual handshake in the digital world.
It got the name from the fact that a traditional headshot is shown from the chest or shoulders up. It features only the head of the person in the image. Get it? “Headshot”
Depending on the industry, they can include a little more of the shoulders and torso or be cropped in very tightly to only show from the forehead down to the neck. Business headshots usually are cropped a bit looser, and entertainment headshots are trending toward being cropped very tight.
But what a headshot is not, it is not just a casual snapshot or a picture you cropped from your last vacation. Notice the image at the top of the page. One is a well-lit headshot I took with professional lighting that is subtly shadowed and color corrected. The other image was taken by a party photographer with my husband who I cropped out. It is flatly lit with no shadows. Both images I think, are pretty great, but each has a purpose. One is my screen saver on my phone, the other is my profile picture on many online sites.
A professional headshot is carefully crafted to convey specific qualities that are crucial for your business:
- Trustworthiness: A good headshot helps people feel confident in you before they even meet you.
- Professionalism: It signals that you take your business seriously and pay attention to detail.
- Approachability: Believe it or not, a well-done headshot can make you seem friendly and easy to work with.
- Confidence: It shows you're poised and ready to tackle whatever comes your way.
For a long time, headshots were primarily associated with actors and models. But in today's digital-first world, where your online presence is often your first impression, professional headshots are essential for everyone in business.
If you're a:
- Realtor: Your headshot builds immediate trust with potential clients looking for someone reliable to help with their biggest investment.
- Lawyer: It conveys the professionalism and approachability that clients seek in legal counsel. Depending on the type of law practiced, a headshot might show expressions like happy, stern, empathetic, or victorious.
- Entrepreneur: It helps you stand out, build your personal brand, and show future customers you're a serious contender.
- Consultant, Coach, or Business Professional: It's vital for establishing credibility and making a memorable impression on your website, LinkedIn, and marketing materials.
Your headshot is a powerful marketing tool. It tells your story, often before a single word is read.

When you work with a professional headshot photographer (like yours truly!), you're getting more than just someone with a fancy camera. You're getting an expert who understands:
